MDIS x Kolej MDIS Malaysia - Inaugural Cross-cultural Student Leadership Programme

Malaysia, 24 August 2022 In this globalised world, the ability to lead in a complex cross-cultural environment is a vital skillset for young leaders of the future. In light of the easing of travel restrictions, the Management Development Institute of Singapore (MDIS) in collaboration with Kolej MDIS Malaysia, launched a Crosscultural Student Leadership Programme as part of its regional student mobility initiatives. Held from 22 July to 24 July, the programme aims to foster student leadership while creating a valuable intercultural experience and forming regional integration that technology will never replicate.

A total of 80 student leaders from the Malaysia and Singapore institutes participated in the three-day two-night programme held in Kolej MDIS Malaysia, EduCity Iskandar Puteri in Johor, Malaysia. Kolej MDIS Malaysia is the second overseas campus of MDIS, offering Diploma courses and globally recognised UK degree programmes in diverse disciplines, including Business and Management, Finance, Banking and Accounting, Tourism and Hospitality, Mass Communication, Information Technology and Digital Media. The regional experience provided through this mobility programme seeks to strengthen the ties between both institutions, further enhancing collaboration along the way and creating valuable opportunities to learn good practices of the foreign higher education system which would mutually benefit students and institutions.

The leadership programme was designed to nurture the leadership skills of tertiary students while instilling future-readiness and inculcating a sense of responsibility towards the society. During the programme, student leaders were guided through a series of curated activities comprising elements of team building, student leadership lectures, team flag and relay activities and more, offering invaluable takeaways and learning points for self-exploration and leadership development. Students were able to benefit personally and professionally by acquiring values, skillsets and knowledge which can help them fulfil their greater potential on their leadership journey. This programme also provided an open public space for casual discussion where students from different countries and cultures can share their traditional cultures.

Implications of this intercultural student leadership programme go far beyond education. It strives to nurture value-driven future leaders, who will be highly sought-after for their adaptability and versatility. Driven by MDIS’ core mission to provide students with insightful learning experiences – not merely limited to teaching or learning theoretically – but also providing ample opportunities for self-development and exposure to multi-cultural settings during the course of study. Ultimately, MDIS seeks to see its students graduate with strong personal skills and international mobility experience as part of their portfolios.
